Tolerance and Understanding Begins with Me

The theme of Wesak Day this year is “Tolerance and Understanding Begins with Me”.

The President of Malaysian Buddhist Association, Venerable Seck Jit Heng in view that until now, we are still unable to conclude the cause of the present Covid-19 pandemic albeit numerous speculations and opinions. Nevertheless, it is crucial for us to find ways to stop the disease from spreading further. Since the outbreak is mainly caused by the collective karmic retributions of humans, we could only eliminate such condition with our collective wholesome deeds. We need to address this situation with a pure heart and a peaceful mind regardless of its root cause. We anticipate that this is going to be a prolonged battle; thus, we need to learn to protect ourselves and to be mindful of the health of others in this undesired situation.

We need to understand that in order for us to stay healthy, we too have to ensure that the health of others is also maintained. Therefore, all of us in the whole world, regardless of our status in the society should treat each other with tolerance, understanding and thoughtfulness. In order to work together and to help each other, we need to forego our past resentments and hatred and put aside all differences. It is only with the nation’s whole-hearted unity, we could upkeep the safety and health of its people besides regaining our economic stability and achieving strong economic growth progressively; hence, overcoming our current crisis.

We fathom that such enormous tasks to control the pandemic and to promote economic growth cannot be accomplished individually. However, if we bring forth the altruistic, selfless and fearless spirit of “Tolerance and Understanding Begins with Me”, with our virtues, we can influence, inspire and touch people’s life with the Buddha’s teaching of Loving Kindness, Compassion, Empathetic Joy and Equanimity in our unified objective and vigorous effort towards building a healthier home, society and nation.

Let us learn to foster and guard our pure and peaceful mind through this cause and may we also learn to cherish the importance of caring and appreciating our surroundings, environment and the people around us. Last but not least, may we be showered with the blessings and protections of the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha, may we aspire for the nation and its people to be safe and peaceful always, may the grace of the Buddhas illuminates all beings and may the Wheel of Dhamma turns perpetually.

“ May the coronavirus pandemic be eradicated completely,
May all of us cultivate blessings and wisdom,
May all of us always be healthy, happy and at peace.”
